Presentation Software

Presentation software is a great way to enhance the learning environment. I remember when I started taking classes online during on my A.A. degree a great deal of it was just "read this...fill out the notes". From time to time there was a PowerPoint to view. Now with software that allows the instructor to voice over it feels more directed rather than "teach it to yourself". I am a learner that benefits from both auditory and visual instruction. It helps me tremendously to be able to hear commentary and read the slides. I like that I can pause and replay the presentations as well so that I can make sure I am fully understanding.  It would be nice if there was a way to ask questions during a presentation and get immediate feedback.

  1. Alisha, it looks like we have some things in common. I am also a visual learner. I have to see it to understand. I think presentation software has aided my understanding on subjects/topics that I would have normally struggled to comprehend. Like any tool there will always be some drawbacks. I like to use PowerPoint as an example. If there is too much wording on each slide, I often find my mind wandering and not focused whereas if there were pictures/videos with explanations I really benefit from that style of instruction. Some presentation software programs do allow you to ask questions during a presentation. Elluminate Live has a chat feature where you can ask the entire class or the teacher privately. I agree though and wish there were more software programs out there that allowed a student to ask questions throughout the presentation.

  2. Alisha, I too need more than one portal to have information put into my long term memory. I really like it when instructors use technology to appeal to all of the learning styles. I need to hear information, see information, and do something before I can understand. I like the idea of questions being addressed because it gives an opportunity for dialogue. I also like it when instructors use interactive means of allowing students to apply what has been learned. I experienced this when I took chemistry. They had a program that allowed us to apply concepts from class and interact with material. It really made a difference for me.
